Assignment Checklist Assessment...Grading Project Ideas
Required Reading--no books required Frequently Asked Questions Resources

The first and most important thing that you need to know as FCS teachers is that I am NOT an FCS teacher.  I have never taught FCS.  However, I do know about the Internet.  With help from my school's AWESOME Family and Consumer Sciences teacher (Sherry Vogel) I created this course.

What I love about FCS is that the information you teach is something that children actually need to know.  From there, let's begin this course.  As experts in the field, if I have missed something, need to delete something or need to re-arrange the page or course in any way, please let me know.  I am willing to learn and grow from your experience and knowledge.

Let's Begin...

Questions
How much work will I have to do to successfully complete this course?
Use the assignment checklist to help guide you.  The purpose is NOT to have you do busy work, but instead to have you complete practical assignments that will help you with your teaching.

What do I do if I need help or have a question?
E-mail me at TLittle844@aol.com write HELP in the subject line.  If that isn't fast enough, call me at 712-258-3314.  If you don't reach me, call back.  Even if you leave a message, I might not receive it?!  (Teenagers you know!)

What happens if I find an assignment that is just too off the wall or too narrow or too broad for my teaching situation?  E-mail or call me with an idea to alter the assignment to meet your needs.

How do I know if I am done with the course?
When you have checked all of the assignments,  you are done.  Mail the checklist and your assignments to me via US Mail all at once in one envelope.

Will I get my final project back?
NO, please make copies for me and keep your original.  I will send comments on a piece of paper, but the cost of sending the projects back is just too high.

Do I have to attend the Share Fair that is August 2nd?
NO, this is optional.  The purpose of the Share Fair is that people can come together to share what they learn.  Your grade will not be docked.  Your birthday will not be taken away.

Time Log
You need to keep a time log that reflects a minimum of 15 hours.  You should keep record of the time that you are at the on-site class.  Also record any time that you are on line, reading, or working on the class assignments.  Many people log 25-35 hours. You can access a time log on line at http://academic.wsc.edu/redl/classes/tami/timelog.html or you can design one to meet your needs.

Action Plan
You will write a plan of what you hope to learn, discover, or goals you wish to accomplish after completing the course.  Upon completion of the course, you will evaluate if you were able to complete your action plan.  A sample action plan is on line for you to view.

Review of Internet Basics
If you need to review Internet Basics, please go to this link http://academic.wsc.edu/redl/classes/tami/atbasic.html.  This is NOT required.  It is just a helpful source if you need some extra basic skills help!

Lesson Plans
Locate a variety of lesson plans using the RESOURCES link.  Choose 1 lesson plan and write HOW you will use the lesson plan in your existing curriculum.  Be sure to include the URL of the lesson plan. OR  Choose one web site.  Write the Internet address, the title and a plan for how you can use it with your students.  You may even create a worksheet, a scavenger hunt, or a parent page to supplement the site.

ERIC
Write a scavenger hunt for one of these ERIC sites.  Your audience is other Family and Consumer Sciences educators.  What is a scavenger hunt?  Do the assignment at the Technology Integration Page Scavenger Hunts to help you through it!

Evaluate one web site
Read the article in your packet about Evaluating Web Pages.  Go to the Kathy Schrock Guide for Educators for an evaluation page that you can use.  Evaluate one web site of your choice on the topic of Family and Consumer Sciences.  Be sure to list the URL of the page you are evaluating.  You can do this evaluation by printing a copy and writing on it with pen or pencil OR copy and paste the evaluation form and type in the answers.  Either is fine for this assignment.

Sell a Site
Choose one MUST SEE site from the RESOURCES link to sell to your colleagues.  Write a sales pitch making sure that you include the URL of the site.  This Sell a Site CAN be the same site that you evaluate.  Be sure to "type" this assignment so that it is neat for your colleagues.

Organize and Rank Sites
Using the RESOURCES list below, organize the sites into categories.  You can just use the numbers instead of using the whole site or words.  Give the categories labels such as NUTRITION, CHILD CARE, etc.  After viewing the sites, choose your own TOP 5 list that you would recommend to other Family and Consumer Sciences Educators.  Be sure to "type" this assignment so that it is neat for your colleagues.

Final Project
Be sure to "type" this assignment so that it is neat for your colleagues. Black type on White paper makes it easier to copy.  I will make copies of the Scavenger Hunt, Sell a Site, Organize/Rank a Site and Final Project for everyone in the class.

For the final project, you can choose to write a Web Quest, a Scavenger hunt, a Parent Information page, a lesson plan, a list of useful sites for a theme unit, a Power Point project, one of many different kinds of web pages, or YOU decide.
If you have questions, feel free to ask.

Here are some ideas as well.  Write a letter to parents telling them how you will use the Internet in your classroom.  Identify 5-10 sites that connect to a unit or theme. Include the URL and a brief summary for each site.  Create a hotlist that contains 10-20 sites that will help you throughout your school year.  Write a lesson plan or unit using the Internet as a tool.

Evaluation
Complete the evaluation in your packet.  If you are comfortable with me knowing your identity, send it in the same envelope as your assignments.  If not, send it to me in a separate envelope with no return address listed.

OPTIONAL
Share Fair—Anyone may attend.  You may bring family members or colleagues for an educational field trip.  There will be snacks and lots of learning fun.  I will have items for purchasing. The only requirement is that I know how many are coming to plan for space and food.

You have the opportunity to share your final project with others.  This sharing fair is August 2nd, 1999 at Hinton Community School, Hinton, IA.  The time is from 9 am to 12 noon.  Set up a little display, make a poster, create a packet.  Anything you want.  You may present your final project to the group.  You may bring copies to share with everyone.
